We Oregonians often marvel at how fortunate we are to live in the Pacific Northwest. This remarkable part of the world is bestowed with majestic mountains, dramatic coastlines, impressive forests and lush wetlands. Within these places, where we relax and recreate, lives a plethora of plant and animal species. However, as our communities grow, more of these natural spaces are being damaged or disappearing by means of development and human encroachment. It is therefore critical that we protect Oregon’s native habitats and species through conservation efforts and educating our communities about why such places have value when preserved.
This is exactly what is achieved by the Friends of the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge, a fantastic organization dedicated to the conservation and welfare of the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge Complex. Located just outside of Portland, Oregon, this protected area is one of the nation’s few urban national wildlife refuges. Its units sit along the floodplain of Tualatin River and is home to roughly 200 migratory and year-round bird species as well as over 50 kinds of mammals, 25 types of reptiles and amphibians, and a variety of fish, insects and plants.
Being so close to Portland’s suburbs gives the Friends of the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge an excellent opportunity to engage the public. Through their work, they help to protect these areas by organizing fundraising events, volunteer efforts, and native plant initiatives. They also offer a variety of educational programs that span across all age groups. One such program is the “puddle stompers,” a free, monthly series geared towards children aged 0-5 which includes a different animal theme each month, a short trail walk, and fun crafts.
Living in nearby Tigard, I have been enjoying my time spent at the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge for years. Along with places like Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, it holds a spiritual reverence for me. Some of my most intimate and impactful encounters with nature have taken place here. It has contributed to shaping my beliefs and helped to heal my mind and spirit through more challenging times. Therefore, my partnership with the Friends of the Tualatin River National Refuge is extremely important to me.
Come out and visit the refuge soon! You will be happy you did, just as I always am.
